About Paper in General
Paper is made from Cellulose, which comes from the cell walls of a plant. Cellulose consists of repeating chains of glucose (a simple sugar) molecules. The longer the glucose chain, the stronger the paper is.
Before the mid 1800s western paper was made from cloth rags and cotton. Then is the mid 1800s wood replaced the rags that were used.
Up to the 1980s the wood pulp paper was more acidic which caused it to be less durable. For more information on paper types and documents restoration see our blog page.
Factors that deteriorate documents.
- Absorbing moisture from humidity breaks down the glucose chains
- Adids from the environment (air polution) or from the raw materials causes acid hydrolysis and breaks down the chains
- The glucose chains break down over time
