Ambrotypes
What are they?
Ambrotypes were made by coating glass with a chemicals that produced a negative image. When this glass with a black coating was put behind it a positive image was produced. If you tilt it at an angle the dark areas remain the same, then it is an Ambrotype.
Factors that cause deterioration
- The broken glass
- The emulsion scratches easily
- Mold developing inside the case (See images below)
Daguerreotypes
What Are Daguerreotypes?
A daguerreotype image is made on silver-plated copper that is treated with mercury vapor and then glass is placed on top of this. The exposure could take up to 15 minutes, so the subjects will have a serious and concentrated look. Daguerreotypes were not practical for portrait photography.
Factors That Cause Deterioration
- High humidity causes corrosion
- The image is fragile & damaged by handling outside the casing
- The silver in the image tarnishes
- Broken glass from handling
