Sticky Shed Syndrome
Sticky Shed Syndrome is the breakdown of the binder of magnetic tapes caused by the binder absorbing moisture. This can cause the tape layers to peal off and tear apart while it is being played. Residue from the tape is left on the playback heads and other parts of the equipment. Sticky Shed Syndrome can make the tape can become unusable.
Mostly common in tapes that were made in the 1970s and 80s which used polyester-urethane binders.
The solution is to literally bake the tape and drive out the moisture. The saying “Don’t try this at home” holds true in this case. Please don’t try it in your home oven! If not done right at the proper temperature for the right amount of time, and preferably with equipment made for that purpose, the tape could be completely destroyed.
