Tintypes
These are photos that are printed on a thin piece of metal. Primarily used during the 1860s and 1870s. They became popular because they could be developed in 10 minutes.
They are also referred to as Melainotypes and Ferrotypes and were made by using a process called wet collodion. Collodion is a solution that is the consistency of syrup which is in alcohol or ether. The solution is applied to a thin iron plate which is then covered with silver nitrate. There is also another method using gelatin emulsion instead of collodion.
Factors That Cause Deterioration
- The iron plating rusts from high humidity causing the emulsion to blister
- The emulsion scratches and tarnishes
- The iron plating gets bent which causes the emulsion to crack
